I Have a Father Who…

I have a father who…

Gave it all up to give everything to me.

Is a man of few words, but somehow always finds the right ones at the right time.

Taught me about the quadratic equation before my high school math teacher did, pissing him (the teacher) right off and getting me in trouble for being ahead of the game. Haven’t used that stupid quadratic equation since.

Threw the biggest party for my high school graduation, ensuring not only us kids but our parents celebrated in fabulous style…and when he got the note from the principal a week prior asking all parents to hold “substance-free celebrations,” he went out and bought more champagne.

Is obsessed with cashmere sweaters. And in turn taught me about the importance of quality….and quantity.

Has traveled the world but often reminds me that he only started to really fill his passport in his 40s. There is time.

Blames me for “talking him” into buying his dream car. Yet I have never been allowed to drive it.

Was hard on me when he needed to be and easy on me when he needed to be. And it turns out, his timing was usually right. In hindsight, of course.

Opens the front door wide at midnight on New Year’s Eve to let the bad from the previous year out and the good from the year ahead in.

Makes too much food for every occasion in life. He showed up with a full charcuterie platter at the hospital when I was in labor with Little D…you know, in case we got hungry for salami.

Has a twinkle in his eye.

Happy father’s day, dad.

Beautiful post… I shall remember my father today (who passed away 20 months ago) with respect
and the hope that his soul has finally found some piece.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there…
