Notes on a Summer

Today was Little D’s “first day of school.” I put this in quotes because her preschool actually runs year-round, so even though she was just there on Friday, today would have been her first day in a new classroom, new teachers, new cubby, new friends to be found. Note the “would have been.” Instead, she is upstairs nursing what I personally believe is a serious case of butterflies — a case so bad it caused her to toss her cookies post-breakfast — and we will try again tomorrow morning for Little D’s SECOND day of school.

Regardless what day it is, as the sun sets a little earlier each night, the back-to-school aisles at Target whittle down to nothing and the air gets a little…um, hot (we’re having a heat wave, this is SoCal), I have been looking back on this summer and its many riches.

We watched Kai grow from a 5-month-old to an 8-month-old and any mother can tell you that a transition such as this is simply amazing. He has a voice, a will, and a determination that shines through more and more every day, and my heart has literally grown with each milestone like I never thought possible.

We saw Little D change and mature into such a pleasant girl that the flashbacks of the terrible twos and threes are (almost) just a faint memory. It’s like someone sprinkled fairy dust over her head and she learned to control her meltdowns, mind her manners, and dive into an imaginary world of play and creativity that has made me want to throw it all out the window and just be young again.

We swam. We dunked our heads underwater for the first time. We ate a lot of ice cream. We ate a lot of burgers. We smelled of sunscreen. We learned to cook. We drank a lot of wine. We tried solids. We giggled in the back seat. We rode merry-go-rounds. We kissed a lot of scraped knees. We got sand in a lot of places. We started yoga. We played hooky. A lot of hooky. And we laughed. We laughed a lot.

Not just on the first day or second day. But every day.
