The Best Valentine’s Gift Ever

2014 February 11

We just got back from a 36-hour getaway in the desert. Just the two of us, no kids, no friends, no worries (for the most part).

And it was the best Valentine’s gift ever.

Not just the hotel, which was lovely and tranquil and postcard perfect.

Not the massages, which were relaxing and reinvigorating and much-needed.

Not the hours spent reading by the pool, hot sun warming our limbs, cool, slushy drinks being hand-delivered, books and magazines piled up, ready to finally be read.

Not even the hours spent floating in the pool, side by side, staring up at the cloudless, royal blue sky, marveling at the mountains and the palms swaying in the gentle wind.

Not the roaring fireplace in our villa that cast a gorgeous warm glow on our evening under a blanket of stars.

Not the dinner for two, complete with cocktails, three courses, wine, and an incredibly decadent dessert.

Not the drive home through the winding desert roads (that almost made me sick) where it seemed like every song that came on the radio was the perfect one for that exact moment and that the empty horizon signified peaceful days ahead.

It wasn’t just all of that. Though, trust me, that was all very good.

It was the time spent together. It was really talking to each other again, without the distractions of buzzing phones or chatty kids or looming deadlines. It was really listening to each other, to dreams and goals and concerns and jokes. It was time that has simply evaded us the past few months. It was a mutual respect that had maybe lost its luster a little bit.

And it didn’t really matter that we spent this time away from home, in a fancy hotel. Yes, that was a gift for each of us, a chance to unwind and relax a little.

But what really mattered to our relationship wasn’t the hotel villa or the bougainvillea or the candlelit dinner.

It was that we made the time about us and nothing else.

Just us. Real, quality time for us. That ended up being the real gift. The real Valentine.

PS – that last photo right there is me covered in sunscreen with no make up on. So if I’m not your favorite blogger yet, I should be now…for putting that out for the world to see 😉

You look beautiful in that pic, and happy 🙂

Love the 36 hour getaway- it’s really all you need to unwind sometimes. We’re headed to PS this weekend, though sadly not to the Viceroy!

I thought you looked lovely in the photo! And a lovely reminder that time alone as a couple is necessary. So easy to un-prioritise in the midst of life.
