Well that’s it, folks.

Today, the tree will come down. The lights will be unplugged and tucked away in a tangled mess. The holidays will officially bid us adieu for another year.

It’s always a weird but somewhat welcome transition, isn’t it? All the joy and anticipation and promise of the season keeps you going for weeks and then you are just as excited about packing it all away and going back to your normal life, routines and diet. This is my first menu plan of 2014 and it includes some favorites, some extra veggies to make up for the exorbitant amount of chocolate consumed over the past month, and of course, some pizza:

Sunday – roast chicken with yellow potatoes and onions (feels appropriate to go for a warm, comforting meal tonight to usher us into the first official work week of the year).

Monday – meatless Monday will be penne with doctored Trader Joe’s vodka sauce: add fresh cut peppers, onions, fresh herbs, grated parmesan, salt and pepper to taste. Here’s a great video that taught me how to julienne an onion when I didn’t even know what julienne was.

Tuesday – fish tacos

Wednesday – (new recipe for me, pictured above) Deb Perelman’s pork chops with cider, horseradish and dill. To be served with roasted brussel sprouts and butternut squash (I told you we have a lot of sweets to make up for!). I have The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, but you can also find the recipe here.

Thursday – steaks marinated in this with grilled peppers and onions and Gwyneth Paltrow’s garlic bruschetta: grill a few pieces of fresh baquette or country bread, rub them on both sides with a cut garlic clove, drizzle generously with olive oil and season with a little sea salt.

Friday – homemade pizza. Because it’s Friday.
