Today You Are Three

Batman-WhatWouldGwynethDo

Today you are three.

Today marks the end (we hope) of the terrible two’s. A year that was so beyond frustrating and so beyond amazing all at once.

Today you are obsessed with fire trucks. Tractors. Construction workers. Garbage trucks. All boy, all the time.

Today you fill up the room with your laughter, with your words, with your spirit. It is positively infectious.

Today your eyes shine like no other. Your cheeks are full of love and joy.

Today your favorite color is green.

Today your sister is your best friend. You won’t admit it, but she is.

Today you go to preschool three mornings per week and you like it, but only after the whole drop off ordeal is done. You don’t like that. Even after four months of it.

Today you want a dog for Christmas. But not really, only because your sister wants one.

Today you weigh about 32 lbs. You are quite tall for your age, competing with most of the four-year-olds on the playground in the height department.

Today you believe in Batman and Santa Claus and the Octonauts.

Today you are still content sleeping in a crib even though we all know a big kid bed is right around the corner. And we are content to keep you there.

Today you like to eat fruit and pasta and salami and carrots. You don’t like most meat (with the odd exception of salami), yogurt or apple sauce…unlike any other preschooler on the planet.

Today you are almost fully potty trained. Almost. Let’s just leave it at that.

Today you introduce yourself to strangers as Captain Barnacles (see Octonauts note above). When they ask you what your real name is, you look at them funny.

Today you still like to cuddle. To hold hands. To be my baby.

Today you don’t want to be turning three. You told me you want to stay two. And you don’t want a cake. But we got you the one you requested anyway: chocolate with green frosting. And you don’t want balloons, but there will be some of those, too. And maybe a candle or three.

Because today is a day to celebrate you. The happiness and light and pure love you bring to our world.

I don’t know what life was ever like before you.

Happy birthday, Kai!

Milo also does not want to get older. When I asked him why he didn’t want to grow up, he said “Because I want to always stay your little sweetheart.” Aw, cue the waterworks / heart melting.

Ugh! This is adorable and I love your reflection of your son’s last year. It makes me look forward to knowing such in depth details to a child.

    Happy Birthday to your Kai!
