A Sweet Good Night

MotherandDaughter-WhatWouldGwynethDo

I just went up to tuck Little D into bed.

There are two times of the day when I am really, truly 100% focused as a mom: drop off and bed time. Two. I know, it’s sad to admit. But those are the times when I truthfully don’t have my phone anywhere near me (I have a strict personal policy against bringing my phone into my kids’ schools), no distractions, nothing else to focus on except my child and me.

She turned to me with a not-so-sleepy grin and said “I like Three Musketeers.”

She had chosen that as her post-dinner treat tonight from what’s left of her Halloween stash.

Three Musketeers is one of my faves.

“Me too,” I said.

“The chocolate is good but it’s not too rich so you don’t get too much sugar,” she said, conscientious as ever.

I laughed.

“You are made for me,” I said in reply. “I mean, I made you…but you were made for me. The way you think, the way you act, the way you treat people…you were made for me.”

I let my words just hang there in the silent air between us.

But in my mind they kept going: this girl is so amazing, how did we find each other? How are we so in tune? How can she say things and do things and look at things in a way that is so eerily familiar to me…even though we really just met? How can I see myself in another person in every moment, big and small? How can I appreciate and love every quirk, every motion, every random thought that comes out of her mouth and gets lost in her head?

She was simply made for me.

She looked at me lovingly and replied, in all seriousness:

“I was also made to play the harmonica.”

Of course you were, my sweet girl. Of course you were.

I love those raw moments between a parent and their child. Those are the moments I look forward to.
