A Day Not Remembered

Remembering-WhatWouldGwynethDo

There was another school shooting today.

This time it happened in Sparks, a town near Reno, Nevada, at a middle school around seven o’clock in the morning.

Amid your morning routine, your long day at work, your on-the-go lunch and your afternoon errands…you may have missed it.

And I wouldn’t blame you.

I learned about it first via a mom blogger who lived in the area, not one of the myriad of news outlets I follow on social media.

It wasn’t Columbine, so it wasn’t the first. And it wasn’t Newtown, so it wasn’t the most tragic (in terms of casualties).

It was a day that will likely never be remembered for so many in this country.

October 21, 2013.

A day that will forever mark one school community and the two families who lost loved ones, but sadly didn’t seem to make much of a mark on the rest of the nation.

There are news stories posted now with “breaking” updates that only came in hours after the fact. They are nestled alongside stories of government woes and celebrity weddings and weather bulletins. It will certainly be a story on the evening broadcast, but probably a brief one, not an in-depth analysis of who, what, when….why. It barely registered a blip on social media conversations and posts and shares.

Does it mean these devastating tales of random violence that keep stalking our children and our sense of safety are becoming so common place that they barely warrant a headline anymore? Does it mean we have become so desensitized that two victims means so much less than 12 or 20? Or maybe it simply means I am following the wrong news outlets…and the right mom bloggers.

All I know is that, for me, it meant another day that will be remembered…but perhaps not for the same reasons as similar days in the past. Because it makes me so sad that this continues to be an issue and a news story and a heavy weight on this country and its young ones. Its educators and its law enforcement. On mothers and fathers everywhere who think about it, say a little prayer that it wasn’t their home, their school, their community. And have to go back to facing their day.

The day was October 21, 2013.
