NowReading-WhatWouldGwynethDo

So the good news is, since my last post about reading, I have still managed to find time to keep doing it. It wasn’t just a dream!

I finished Lean In just yesterday. The truth is, I bounced back and forth between this book and another, and I am wondering if that diluted its impact for me a little. I was ready to read it and come out feeling inspired and driven and motivated…but instead, I was kind of depressed. It painted a pretty solemn picture of life as a woman in today’s career world, and an even bleaker image of life as a working mother and rather than getting advice and tips from it, I felt like it left me feeling unsure and anxious about my career path. I am reading it at a very interesting point in my career so personal factors certainly played a role in how I read into it, but overall, I didn’t get that much from it. And I really wanted to. Did you read it? Did I miss the point altogether? Because like I said, I was going from that to…

Sharp Objects. Woah. A friend of mine recommended this to me a while back after I complained about the Gone Girl ending. She mentioned that it was a little disturbing but more satisfying in the end than the author’s breakout hit. She was right. This book is creepy and disturbing and detailed and frankly, a little f*cked up. But it’s a great read. It’s a finish-it-in-two-days-because-you-can’t-put-it-down read. Again, I felt like the ending was a little rushed, but not in a frustrating way like Gone Girl. You kind of want it to end, but you don’t at the same time. I would definitely recommend it if you like Gillian Flynn’s style of story telling.

Next up: I need something to lighten the mood around here so I opted for Where’d You Go, Bernadette? I have heard great things about this Summer hit (though leave it to me to wait for Fall) so I’m excited to dive into it this week. After that, I think I will jump on the Wild bandwagon next.

What are you reading these days? Would love any new recommendations you may have!

I think you’ll enjoy Bernadette. It’s light but very clever and well-written. I loved Sharp Objects- definitely check out Dark Places as well.

I did get a lot out of Lean In. I didn’t see it as bleak but I do think working women have a lot to overcome. I got a few good tips on salary negotiation and the value of growth in a job rather than just higher pay.

Did you read Me Before You? That’s another light(er) but really riveting read.

i second the dark places recc; hated gone girl with a passion but dark places sounds a lot like your description of sharp objects-thoroughly effed up but couldn’t put it down. if you’d like something a little lighter but still sort of creepy i highly recommend “miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children”

I picked up Wild in the airport last month on a whim and LOVED it! I couldn’t put it down. I’ve heard mixed reviews of Bernadette, I’m excited to see how you like it!

I’ve heard so many things about Where’d You Go, Bernadette so I can’t wait to hear what you think. I read the preview on my Kindle but couldn’t commit to the whole book. Also, I just added Sharp Objects to my reading list!
