WhatWouldGwynethDo - You Are Six

Today you are six.

A year ago today, I thought the baby years were past us, they had slipped away, they were but a memory. Today, I know that to be true.

Today you are a voracious reader. Street signs, the cereal box, the song titles on Pandora. You want to read anything and everything that comes your way. You fall asleep every night with a lit flashlight slipping out of your grasp, book propped open on your chest.

Today you are in karate and you love it. You have a high kick and a loud voice. May you keep them both with you forever.

Today you are a proud, but frustrated big sister. You love your little brother so much, but the terrible two’s have been pretty terrible for you, too.

Today you chew gum in my backseat (when you are allowed to have it), singing along to One Direction. You choose The Fresh Beat Band over cartoons on Nick Jr. But you still go to bed with no less than six stuffed animals to cuddle with.

Today you come home with sayings and words from the playground that make me wince a little. I try not to do it openly, so you will think they have little impact and abandon them altogether.

Today you weigh about 47 lbs.

Today you still, thankfully, stick to your uniform of jeans, tees, hoodies and Ugg boots or sneakers. Hair still in a ponytail. Always.

Today you are almost the tallest girl in your class, but not quite.

Today you still love being a mommy’s girl. You still hold my hand in public. You still want me to rub your back at night. You still give me a huge hug on the playground at drop off. And I still love it all.

Today you know more than I ever did at six years old. About the world, people, the environment, even politics.

Today I can literally see the world as I saw it 28 years ago in your eyes. It’s the greatest gift I have ever been given.

Today your favorite color is blue. You have abandoned pink and purple.

Today you asked for chocolate cake. And you will get the best chocolate cake ever. Topped with six candles. One for each year of absolute joy you have brought to the world.

Today, you are six.

Happy birthday, Little D.

So sweet. I got a little teary eyed thinking about my own kiddos growing up so fast. Happy Birthday to Little D! She’s a beauty.

Ah, I know! Far too fast. Six almost seems like double digits or something to me. Leaving behind five is very bittersweet.

Congrats – what a great story. I’m so glad for you she a) knew your site and b) you got an extra few seconds to interact with her. I hope she visits Boston on her book tour so I can say hi!

Go pick up the 11 year old boy now and give him
