A Comment About Comments

2012 December 11

I cannot tell you how many blog comments I see (here and out and about on the web) that start with “I never comment on blogs….but x, x, and x.”

Well, please, please, please….do.

I have to tell you that nothing drives as much passion and motivation and drive in a blogger than comments.

Stats are nice. PR pitches from companies who recognize you exist are lovely (though as a PR pro, I tend to silently pick them apart just a little bit). Friends of friends telling your friends they read your blog is great.

But comments from actual readers are inspiring like nothing else.

I want to hear your voice. Your opinions. Your likes and dislikes. I want to know the names of the people behind those stats. I want to know what you like about the blog. I want to know why you keep coming back to it. If you keep coming back to it. And if you don’t, that’s ok too. Though no need to comment on that πŸ˜‰

I know from experience what an onslaught of comments can do to the psyche, it isn’t always easy or fun. But if I manage to inspire you in any way on any given day – with a chuckle, a moment of sentimentality, a Clare Vivier clutch you must have – I would love to know about it. And so would the other bloggers you visit and like.

So please, comment away! And next time you do, you can start it with “I always comment on blogs, so x, x, and x.”

Haha, I love it! Um, I sometimes comment on blogs…does that count? But I definitely know how amazing it feels to see that someone has decided to share their thoughts on what I’ve written, so I should return the gesture much more often. Just love your overall style, and the laid-back parenting ethos, which I aspire to emulate someday!

Thank you, Julie! Love that my parenting approach has resonated somewhat — it’s not ALWAYS that laid back πŸ˜‰

This is my first comment to your blog. I hear you on commenting; I try to do so as often as I can. I have been so touched and inspired by so many bloggers pre-child and now that I am a mom. It is just so comforting to know that others experience the same things as moms, women and human beings. Maybe someday I will write a blog but for now I just enjoy reading such talented people.
I can’t remember how I came across your blog but the name got me right away…I also love all things Gwenyth and I also really enjoy your down to earth voice as well as the wonderful style you seem to have. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and life with all of us and I will make sure to comment more often.

Yes! The mom thing creates an instant bond, regardless of what stage you are at, where you live, whether you drink wine or not πŸ˜‰

Thank you for the kind comments, and for reading. Means so very much — and please do comment more often!

Your blog is actually the only one I read on an-almost-daily basis. I can relate to your writings in a lot of ways: kids, work, ups, downs, chaos, gratefulness….I love how real it is πŸ™‚

And I love, love, love your comment. Thank you for taking the time to share it – I know there is little of it these days!

This makes so much sense. You put yourself out there with every post (I never miss one!) and I can understand the need to know something, anything, resonated with us.

You are such a talented writer that I have been slightly intimidated to leave a comment…worried about my sentence structure, grammar, boring content… πŸ™‚

So, with that said, I will attempt to comment more often because so much of what you write hits home – serious home – and I want you to know it…poor grammar and all.

Oh mama, I actually meant to include that in the post, so you read my mind. I don’t care if you write a comment backwards and upside down, just always fun to read. xx

I just LOVE this! You are always so right on! πŸ™‚

I keep coming back because I think your blog is neat:) and…I like the tidbits you share about your family, so I know that I’m not the only one trying to have perfectly coiffed hair a nice hand bag or two and be a good mom.

Ha, thanks Bianca! Yes, a good handbag and good parenting are definitely not mutually exclusive! πŸ˜‰

Your blog is probably the one I hope most has been updated every morning! Don’t always comment on blogs – because, well, as the mother of two small boys, it seems an impossible feat most times. But I do love the mix of stuff on your blog, the honesty with which you write about parenting and motherhood and for me, a South African transplant living in London, a glimpse into mummyhood across the pond.

Aw, thanks Amanda! And trust me, I know what it’s like to be tight on time. Sometimes just getting the opportunity to read a post on a favorite blog is vacation enough — but when and if you find an extra minute to share a thought or two, I promise it will be very much appreciated. xx

Kelly! You should have absolutely said hi! I would have loved to have met you in-person. Alas, for now we’ll have to resort to comments πŸ˜‰

Thank you so much for reading! And thank your sister for me, too!
