The Year of Being Five

2012 August 7

You started it as a baby.

And now, mid-way, you are a girl. A real girl.

I am so excited and scared and sad and proud to see how you will end it.

It’s the year you graduated (some of the time) from cartoons to movies.

It’s the year you started to say “for real” and “true story” and “that’s so annoying.”

It’s the year you learned about the mean girls.

It’s the year you experimented with being a mean girl. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to suit you very well.

It’s the year you grew…and grew…and grew.

It’s the year you lost your first tooth.

It’s the year you asked about nail polish.

It’s the year you wanted more time “alone.”

It’s the year you still sleep with 11 or so stuffed animals.

It’s the year you still need your night light.

It’s the year you learned to read.

It’s the year you will start kindergarten.

It’s the year you want to go by yourself. (For the record, I don’t usually let you.)

It’s the year you want your own drink at Starbucks. But you still want my name on it.

It’s the year that you discovered Taylor Swift.

It’s the year that you still love Disney Junior.

It’s the year that you don’t want to wear dresses.

It’s the year that you have started to notice the girls who do.

It’s the year that you are an exceptional big sister.

It’s the year that you want to say “no,” but still love to say “yes.”

It’s the year that you laugh and dance and sing like no one is watching.

It’s your year, baby.

And I will never forget it.

Beautiful tribute. You’re headed into the years that were my favorite, those elementary school years. I’d do it all again (and skip the sleepless newborn nights). From where I stand with an about-to-be teenager (yipes!), it only gets better. Harder at times, maybe. But all the growth is a delight.
