Milk + Bookies – Cause we love

So, true confession time. I am a bookworm of the greatest proportions.

As a child, I was president of the “Battle of the Books” team at Beacon Hill Elementary School for something like three years straight and under my rule, no page was unturned, no chapter overlooked, no competition trophy left behind.

Since darling husband’s idea of a good read is the Surfer Magazine photo annual, I have taken it upon myself to personally instill this love of all things paper and word (especially the smell of library books…sigh, remember those?? Heavenly) onto Little D.

So when we were invited to story time at Soho House where a celebrity member would be reading books to the little ones on a recent gloomy Saturday morning over homemade cookies and milk (I know, we have it ROUGH here in LA), we jumped at the RSVP.

And much to my surprise, I found something even sweeter than the dark chocolate chunks…Milk + Bookies.

Per them, “Milk + Bookies is a nationwide charitable organization that inspires children to give back, using books as its currency. At Milk + Bookies events, boys and girls are provided the opportunity to select, purchase and inscribe books that are then donated to their peers who do not have access to books of their own. The fun-filled events feature music, story time and, of course, milk and cookies.”

Little D chose her book, inscribed and designed her own nameplate for it, promptly positioned herself on the “celebrity” book reader’s lap, and didn’t move from that spot for two hours, when we sadly had to head back home. Just enough time for my Kindle to re-charge itself.

Check out Milk + Bookies at www.milkandbookies.org – you can even throw your own event!
