Faux CAN be fabulous.

I have never been a “fake” kind of gal. Fake flowers make me cringe, I would even prefer baby’s breath, as long as it’s real. Fake hair? Sorry, Britney, even money can’t buy you locks. I bought a faux bag once, when I was like 17, on Canal Street in NY, because at the time, it was the right thing to do as a 17-yr-old. I turned 17 1/2 and threw it away.

But lately, I have had a love affair with fake when it comes to one thing only — costume jewelry. I spent exactly $5.95 on an amazing cuff at H&M over the weekend. Not only did it deliver compliments in my morning meeting filled with stylish West Hollywood PR girls, by night, Little D could play dress up with it to her heart’s content.

I know I am not exactly spotting a trend here – “old lady jewelry” as it’s so awesomely called (is awesomely a word?), has blinged out everywhere from J Crew to Target lately, and I get why. A little pop of color here, a little bit of extra shine there, for a bargain price, will work wonders on any wardrobe – especially that of a working mama. Even my mom, old-school European style glamour aficionado (they buy cashmere like they buy fruit, I swear), had something nice to say about my outfit, for once.

So as Spring style bombards us and Fall peeks around the corner up ahead, I will be taking serious stock of the faux fashion trends in necklaces, bracelets, chunky cocktail rings, and more.

I just have to draw the line at one thing — if your diamonds are faux – small or big – there’s nothing fab about that.

Gold, beads, and lots of shine - for the bargain price of $9.99...
