You nailed it.

I spent $60 on a mani/pedi yesterday. I normally spend $20, but there is this little spot, Bellacures, that charges $60 to sit you in a proper, cozy armchair, play Rufus Wainwright et al. in the background, not skimp on the foot massage, and give you a flawless coat (or 3) of your favorite brand-name polish – nothing exists at Bellacures besides the best: OPI or Essie (I go back and forth).

Getting my nails done became a ritual when I moved to LA — it is a cheap (well, sometimes), fast way to feel like you just got all dressed up and it’s prom night again (minus the bad hair, the bad dress, and the bad peach schnapps). A blowout takes too long, a massage is too $$ to become a regular occurrence, and a facial leaves you all red and puffy. Motherhood does that to you enough already.

Not only does my “Lincoln Park After Dark” make me feel a little more Ashley Olsen than Laura Ashley, it gives me a chance to play hardball when Little D is whining for me to help her with something I know she can do. An important parenting lesson to you all. Observe:

Wipe your tushie for you? Can’t, honey, my nails are wet.

Brush your teeth for you? Wouldn’t want to ruin my nails.

For some reason, must be female-to-female intuition, this completely resonates with her.

Ooh, you are right mummy. I will clean up that spilled milk, don’t chip your nails (insert smug smile here).

We even bond over which color mommy should do before I go, making my get-away and hour of magazine and Rufus-filled bliss painfree. For the record, though, she always says to go light, and I always go dark – these kids can’t control everything in this world.

So as I take on this Monday morning, latte in hand, Little D off to the park with nanny (who also has a fresh coat of “Lilacism” on – I only work with the best, after all), typing away on a plan, proposal and pitch simultaneously, I sigh with content as my shiny, new nails work their way over the MacBook’s keyboard.

My hair might be a mess. I may still be in my pajamas. And my pores may need some serious work. But as far as I am concerned, I nailed it.

Worth. Every. Penny.
